New Zealand stumbles as 500 pilot whales stranded on the beach

New Zealand's Department of Conservation says two large groups of pilot whales have washed up on two remote New Zealand islands. The survivors were euthanized to save them from further suffering.
The New Zealand government said about 250 pilot whales were found beached on Chatham Island on Friday, and three days later, another 240 were found beached on Pitt Island. Both islands are far from the New Zealand mainland. This makes operating the pilot whale rescue impossible.
“Because there is a risk that both humans and whales will be attacked by sharks. The surviving pilot whales were euthanized by our team to prevent further suffering,” said Dave Lundkist, the government's marine technical adviser.
The carcasses of those dead whales are left to decompose naturally in the area. It is not uncommon for many whales to strand on Chatham Island. The largest whale beaching ever on Chatham Island was in 1918, with as many as 1,000 stranded.
